I will offer these to youthful grown-ups from the ages of 15 to 35. Fears of New Intifada Accompany Surge in Mideast Violence - 550 Words

News Article Reflection: Fears of New Intifada Accompany Surge in Mideast Violence (Reaction Paper Sample) Content: News Article Reflection PaperNameInstitutional AffiliationReview of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"Fears of New Intifada Accompany Surge in Mideast Violenceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬By Rudoren JOct. 6th 2015New York TimesNews on the return of another of the famous two violent attacks in the Middle East, Intifada, has sparked interest in various news corporations worldwide. Among various news journalists, Jodi Rudoren recently reacted on the increased killings between Palestinians and Israelites at the Gaza border. In her coverage of the upsurge of violence between Palestine Arabs and Israelites, Rudoren highlights the anxiety contributed by these killings. The consequences of the first and second Intifada were traumatic that prevention of a third combat of the sort has been the major concern of the Palestine Authority (Rudoren, 2015).However, the recent upsurge of killings in both sides of the divide involving shooting of innocent minors has evoked fear of an imminent Intifada. Rudoren (2015) inclu ded quotations from several analysts purporting that a third Intifada is imminent, the question being when it will begin. Nonetheless, Rudoren (2015) in her article claimed that thoughts of another Intifada are obsolete because the circumstances that led to the previous uprisings are quite different to what is unfolding now. This follows failure to resolve the long-lasting conflict through diplomatic dialogue even though leaders from the two sides claim to support peaceful dialogues on the same. This reflection paper aims to highlight the background of the previous massacres between the two sides and most importantly to shade light on the historical causes of the conflict.Although other analysts would disagree with the fact that historical injustices play an important role in what is transpiring in the Middle East, the impact of historic politics on the issue cannot be ignored. The Israel-Palestine conflict, from a historical perspective, can be connected to the role of British intr a- and post-world war I.The role of Great Britainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s administrators in the establishment of the conflict is associated with the signing of three treaties, treaties that have been widely reflected upon by many historians interested in Middle East politics. These treaties include the Hussein-McMahon correspondence, Sykes-Picot agreement and most importantly the Balfour declaration of 1917 which led to the settlement of the Jews in the Palestine region. The then British government pledged support for a Jewish national home in Palestine (Caplan, 2010). However, it is understood that in an earlier treaty with the Arabs (Hussein-McMahon correspondence), the British had promised independence of the Arab states in exchange of military support to defeat the Ottoman Empire. From this perspective, the Arab resistance on the settlement of Jews on their land was justified.ConclusionRudoren (2015) noted that even with the increase of the violence, thoughts of a new uprising by connecting current events with the past are obsolete. The News writer from New York Times supported her claims with the fact...

Adventures Of Huck Finn Estimation Essay Example For Students

Adventures Of Huck Finn Estimation Essay Mark Twains novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, describes a young boy torn between what he feels for his country and what society expects of him and what his heart tells him is right. Huck Finn, faces many situations forcing him to deal with decisions that carry with them the ability to bring about change. Huck begins searching for an identity which is truly his own. In determining his self image, Huck deals with conforming to the social norms and freedom, trying on different identities that do not belong to him, and shaping these new found tributes into an identity which best suits his conscience. Throughout the book, Huck rejects sivilized life because he has no reason for it. All that civilization has brought for him was bad things. He meets many people and they all try to influence him to change his ways to what they see is right. Pretty soon, he does not want to deal with any of it and just wants to live a life of adventure and fun. The novel begins with Huck under the care of Widow Douglas as she took me for her son, and allowed that she would civilize me; but it was rough living in the house all the time. p. 11 Huck has become so used to being free that he sees the Widow Douglas protection solely in terms of confinement. He finds this impossible because he loses his freedom amongst the bars and shackles of civilization. Huck feels that he belongs out under the stars where the community cannot tell him what to do. His drunken and often missing father has never paid much attention to him; his mother is dead and so, when the novel begins, Huck is not used to following any r ules. At the beginning of the book, Huck is living with the Widow Douglas and her sister, Miss Watson. Both women are fairly old and are really incapable of raising a rebellious boy like Huck Finn. They attempt to make Huck into what they believe will be a better boy, as Huck says, to sivilize him. They do this by making Huck go to school, teaching him about different religions, and making him act in a way that the women find socially acceptable, which means no more smoking. Huck, who has never had to follow many rules in his life, finds the demands the women place upon him constraining and the life with them lonely. As a result, soon after he first moves in with them, he runs away. He soon comes back, but, even though he becomes somewhat comfortable with his new life as the months go by, Huck never really enjoys the life of manners, religion, and education that the Widow and Miss Watson impose upon him. They represent everything in society that Huck hates. Pap is Hucks usually drunk father. His abusive nature is the driving force for Huck as he flees down the river. Pap himself is illiterate, nonconforming, and oppressive.  He never pays any attention to Huck and does not take responsibility for his own son. He lets Huck do pretty much whatever he wants, and he abuses Huck. Huck did not go to school, had no manners, and dressed like a scrub. So when he ended up living with Miss Watson and Widow Douglas, he could not stand being controlled. He did not want to live a sivilized life like every other person in the country. He preferred freedom of wilderness and adventure to the restriction of society and its norms. Hucks acceptance of Jim is a total defiance of society. Jim is Miss Watsons slave and runs away because she is going to sell him. .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac , .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac .postImageUrl , .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac , .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac:hover , .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac:visited , .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac:active { border:0!important; } .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac:active , .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u31cab085bb11ce700e86bddc38e841ac:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Throughout "Away" EssayBy Jim being an African American, he has to deal with racial issues. People in their society are not accepting of people of different skin colors. When Huck is with Jim, he is having fun. He would rather live a life of adventure than going to school. He has the freedom that he is used to having when living in the woods with Jim. No one is controlling his life the way Miss Watson and Pap have done in the past. Huck believes he is committing a sin by going against society and protecting Jim. He does not realize that his own instincts are more morally correct than those of society. As Huck drifts down the river on his raft, he begins to look for himself. He attempts to slip into the identities of others to experience things in a different way than they normally would be. Hucks longing for freedom is his only self desire. His freedom requires that he find a conscious, moral identity. He must discover his true self and know himself as a person and as an individual in order to be free. Life is full of unexpected circumstances. People are forced to face these situations that are sometimes unfortunate. Some run away from their problems, while others are strong enough to face them. Their strength to face lifes struggles comes from their valuable morals that guide their choices. Throughout this journey, Huck encounters many different situations in which he learns to adapt and react to each in a way that he feels is suitable. Huck learns about life and the real world. He then gathers what he has learned and combines it into an identity which suits him. This enables him to create a conscience with which he finds himself comfortable and at ease.

Can we critically analyse Ian McEwans Atonement using psychoanalytic criticism Essay Example

Can we critically analyse Ian McEwans Atonement using psychoanalytic criticism Paper Atonement is a post-modern novel, that centres around the protagonist, Briony and her search for forgiveness from her sister Cecelia and a family friend Robbie, the word atonement, meaning the action of making amends for a wrong or injury1. Briony is a thirteen year old, middle class girl whom is an aspiring writer, and at the start of the novel is conducting a play known as The Trials of Arabella. We see throughout the novel Briony is no ordinary 13 year old girl as her imagination is full of stories that can distort her image of reality; this is why the method of psychoanalysis may be applied. Psychoanalysis is a form of therapy which aims to cure mental disorders by investigating the interaction between the conscious and the unconscious elements of the mind2. The novel explores the relationship between the conscious events that happen, and the different subconscious views the characters have on these events all though the creative act of story-telling. The novel begins with the focus on Briony and her eagerness to get her play, The Trials of Arabella, finished for when her brother, Leon, returns home. This play shows Brionys immaturity even through her intelligent wording, it still encapsulates a heroine being rescued by a prince, and thus we can see her understanding of love and relationships has not yet developed. The audience, then through the omniscient narrator recall on an event that happens between Brionys sister Cecelia and the cleaning ladys son Robbie, at first from Cecelias point of view and then Brionys. From Cecelias point of view we are told how Cecelia does not think much of Robbie as it bothered her that they were awkward when they talked3. They both stare for a moment then Cecelia starts to strip to her underwear and dives into the fountain to retrieve the vase, once retrieved she storms back into the house. The second view of this scene is from Brionys point of view in which she watches out of the window Robbie and Cecelia conversing, she imagines that he is proposing to her, however she is startled when Cecelia starts to quickly undress and jumps into the fountain and then rushes off back in tot he house. She reflects wondering what sort of hold Robbie has over Cecelia and how Robbie should have rescued her from drowning before he proposes to her. Here is were Brionys subconscious comes into view, this is as Freud explains part of the mind beyond consciousness which nevertheless has a strong influence upon our actions or thoughts4 , here Briony thinks of the scene as a fairytale in which the heroine is to be rescued, this is based on her own upbringing as her parents never really spoke of their relationship as her father worked away a lot, therefore her only understanding of relationships were the ones she read of in books. This may be also understood in Freuds repression, forgetting or ignoring of unresolved conflicts, unadmitted desires or traumatic past events so that they are forced out of the conscious awareness and into the realm of the unconscious5 again due to her own parents relationship crisis Brionys subconscious maybe bringing up imaginations of what constitutes a good marriage. Furthermore this scene she witnesses seems to be a turn in her life as she now realizes what power one could have over the other, and how easy it was to get everything wrong, completely wrong6, as Hidalgo suggests a young girl who cannot understand the world of adults7, this then results in her terminating her play of the Trials of Arabella, instead she decides to work on a novel of what she had just witnessed instead. This fountain scene can also been seen as a key moment for the relationship between Robbie and Cecelia. Never before had Cecelia stripped off in front Robbie and he notes this and remembers every part of her body, a drop of water on her upper arm an embroided flower, a simple daisy, sewn between the cups of her bra. Her breasts wide apart and small.. 8 he starts to realize he has feelings for Cecelia although he knows this maybe farfetched as she is from a middle class and he a lower class, he still believes they could be together Freuds theory of displacement could be applied here. Displacement is one person or event is replace by another which is in some way linked or associated with it, perhaps because of a similar sounding word or by some form of symbolic substitution9. We are told that in his bedroom Robbie has various photographs ; the cast of Twelfth Night on the college lawn, himself as Malvolio10 Malvolio is known in the play as deluded to think he can have a chance with his employer Olivia, Robbie could have displaced this play to his own situation. The use of the fountain could be describe by Freud in terms of association in which an object can be associated with certain feelings11, so in this case the fountain symbolizing the love between Cecelia and Robbie. The use of an Italianate fountain as the site for an apparently trivial moment in the lovers story may contain an allusion to the Italian fountain in Evelyn Waughs Brideshead Revisited. If this is so, it would be another ironic reversal because the country house that gives title to Waughs novel is the ideological, aesthetic, and emotional center of the novel12. Also 13He is also quick to note What might Freud say? How about : she hid the unconscious desire to expose herself to him behind a show of temper14, this invites the reader to start top think of the novel in a Freudian way, are the actions we read about what they seem? Or are they all making up part of the subconscious that is delivered through unintentional actions? The rest of this chapter goes on to give more evidence to support these questions. We go on to read how Robbie wants to send Cecelia a note in which to apologize for breaking the vase, he writes this out in long hand but also he ends up typing a note saying, In my dreams I kiss your cunt, your sweet wet cunt. In my thoughts I make love to you all day long15, he accidently gives the sordid note to Briony to give to Cecelia. The writing of the sordid note can be first seen by Freud as a Freudian slip16 this is where repressed material in the unconscious finds an outlet through such everyday phenomena as slips of the tongue, slips of the pen, or unintended actions, therefore his desires for Celia subconsciously made him write the note without even thinking about what he was writing and secondly he had subconsciously given the sordid note as his subconscious was till focusing on the objects he was observing in his room mainly the Grays Anatomy, Splanchnology section, page 1546, the vagina17. herefore causing his subconscious again to take over his actions. The content of the sordid note can also conjure up psychoanalysis development in the form of the language used. Lancan looks to language to analyse the subconscious in which he states, how could a psychoanalyst of today not realise that his realm of truth is in fact the word18 and that language is a matter of contrast between words and other words there is a barrier between signifier (the word) and the signified (the referent)19. When looking at the word cunt which Robbie uses in his letter to Cecelia, the signified that Robbie intends it to be is the vagina of a woman, however when Cecelia reads the word, she believes it signifies the unnoticed love between her and Robbie a simple phrase chased around in Cecelias thoughts, of course of course how has she not seen it? 20. Briony reads this word to mean that Robbie is a maniac, A maniac. The word had refinement and the weight of medical diagnoses. This showing how each of the characters subconscious has effected the meaning of the term cunt, through Robbies desire of Cecelia, and Celias realization of love, to Brionys analysis that he is mentally ill for using the word. It is then this word that inevitably changes all their lives forever, as now Briony thinks that Robbie is a maniac and threat to the women in her family she then falsely accuse Robbie of raping her cousin Lola when the twins go missing, she believes she is protecting Cecelia from him therefore her lie is buried in her subconscious. Freud sees this irrational decision due to the Oedipus complex eproducing the competition between siblings21 The reason for her distorted view over the figure she though was Robbie who raped Loa may have been bcause she has feeling herself for Robbie and therefore does not want Ceceila to be with him. This can further be supported by the scene where she tests if Robbie loves her by saving her from drowning, Do you know why I wanted you to save me? Because I love you22. Brionys dream in which she is flying could bring with it sexual connotations of desire as Freud maintains in his dreamwork theory that dreaming of flying represents sexual release, or expansion of your awareness23. Towards the end of the novel we realize how it is Briony who has wrote this whole story out of guilt and repentance. Instead of her leading a life at Cambridge, in which she was intended she follows the footsteps of her sister and becomes a nurse. Freud could interpret this as sublimation, which is the transforming of an unacceptable impulse, whether it be sex, anger, fear, or whatever, into a socially acceptable, even productive form in this case Brionys feeling of regret subconsciously lead her to becoming a nurse. Here she helps out a French soldier who has been wounded and it is here she learned a simple, obvious thing she had always known, and everyone knew: that a person is, among all else, a material thing, easily torn, not easily mended24 realizing that when she was younger she was brought up on a diet of imaginative literature, she was too young to understand the dangers that can ensue from modeling ones conduct on such an artificial world25. Briony now realizes everything she did in the past she looked on with what Freud calls projection negative aspects of ourselves are not recognized as ourselves, at the time she sent Robbie to jail she did not realize she did it out of sub conscious feelings jealousy and spite of her sister, she was determined the figure she saw was Robbie, therefore attempting to use fiction to correct the errors that fiction caused her to commit.

Target Corporation Capital Project Analysis Essay Example

Target Corporation Capital Project Analysis Essay Example Target Corporation Capital Project Analysis Paper Target Corporation Capital Project Analysis Paper The Capital Executive Committee (CEC) of Target Corporation must choose which of 5 large construction projects to approve. More than 1 project can be implemented; however, the capital budget for the fiscal year in question cannot exceed $3. 5B. This case is about force ranking the 5 Capital Project Requests for new construction from best opportunity to worst opportunity to aid the CFO, Doug Scovanner, in the upcoming CEC meeting where the final decision will be made. As stated on page of the case, â€Å"each investment decision would have long-term implications for Target: an underperform store would be a drag on earnings and difficult to turn around without significant investments of time and money, whereas a top-performing store would add value both financially and strategically for years to come. † Capital Executive Committee Composition: The decision makers for capital project requests consists of 5 of the 12 executive officers of Target, including the President and the Chairman / Chief Executive Officer. The other 3 members are the executive vice presidents of Property Development, Stores, and the Chief Financial Officer. The CEC has representation necessary to make effective decisions; however, given the importance of Research and Planning for the inputs to the Capital Project Request Process, as well as the impact of credit card services to the discounted cash flow analysis, Target should consider including the EVP of Marketing and the President of Target Financial Services to this committee. Capital Review Process: The capital review process for Target is consistent with the overarching strategic objective of growth by adding about 100 stores a year while maintaining a positive brand image. Financial performance targets of Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return based on discounted cash flow analysis over a 60 year period have been established. The discounted cash flows account for store generated cash flows and credit card generated cash flows. The review process includes market demographics analysis that considers population growth forecasts, median household income, and education levels. It also assesses progress of existing company plans for the areas and how new developments will impact sales at other Target locations. A specific consideration by the CEC is duration of project. The desire is for projects to complete within the fiscal year the capital is approved to minimize risk of cost overruns that may require additional debt financing and â€Å"raise questions from equity analysist as to the increase risk to the shareholders as well as to the ability of management to accurately project the company’s funding needs. † (p4). Other criteria considered by the CEC include, but are not limited to, total investment size, project profit, and impact to earnings-per-share.

The writer of the readable material you consider has a very significant role in the choosing of your reading material as well. I remember when I was 14; I was anxiously waiting for a novel to get published by my favorite writer Naseem Hijazi. But when it came in my market my friend told me that the novel was not that much good at the expectations we had and the market response was very nil towards it. I decided not to read it but to buy another writer’s book. But sooner I got into the shop I bought my favorite writer’s novel and read the whole 623 pages just because that was written by my favorite writer. The novel’s name was â€Å"Aakhri Chitan† and was written on the history of Muslims rulers when they conquered sub-continent and is about the era of Changez khan and Tataris. Reading pushes you in the world of fantasy and enables you to imagine the objects you read. Imagination is a very good facet that leads you to motivation and courage to do any diffi cult task you come across in your

US women's army auxiliary corp (WWII) Research Paper

US women's army auxiliary corp (WWII) - Research Paper Example Women’s participation in the US military as auxiliary army corps during the Second World War was essentially a milestone in the women’s development and gender equality that were rooted the Enlightenment in Europe.Though women’s involvement in the US Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps was not the direct result of these movements, it can be viewed as the call of the situation that provides the women of the era with a unique opportunity to reinforce their position in outdoor workplace. Also their participation can be viewed as a sequel to the series of remarkable events in the women’s rights in the United States. Though women’s involvement in the US Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps was not the direct result of these movements, it can be viewed as the call of the situation that provides the women of the era with a unique opportunity to reinforce their position in outdoor workplace. Opposing the traditional socio-religious barriers to and prejudices that women are best suited for indoor activities due to their psychophysical fragility, women’s position in outdoor activities was reinforced by their participation in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corp. Indeed the root of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corp lies in the women’s unarmed services â€Å"with the Army under contract and as volunteers during World War I as communications specialists and dietitians† (Bellafiare 4). Subsequently, a bill regarding women’s inclusion into the US Army as regular personnel with equal pay, equal legal protection, disability benefits, pensions and medical care was proposed by Edith Nourse Rogers, the Congresswoman of Massachusetts. But Rogers’ propositions did not go unchallenged since â€Å"both the Army and the American public initially had difficulty accepting the concept of women in uniform† (Moore 34). Finally, Rogers’ committee and the US Military authority came to a compromise regardi ng the women’s legal rights in the army and the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) became existent in 1942 by Public Law 554 () as a branch "for the purpose of making available to the national defense the knowledge, skill, and special training of the women of the nation." (Bellafaire 7). Later, the WAAC gained the full status of an army branch, being converted to Women’s Army Corp (WAC) in 1943. About 150,000 American women â€Å"served in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) during World War 11. Members of the WAC were the first women other than nurses to serve within the ranks of the United States Army† (Bellafiare 5). Rights of the WAAC Members Though Rogers’s idea was to provide the women with full status of army personnel in the US Army, due to the novelty of the idea and social barriers and prejudice towards women’s participation in armed activities, the WAAC members did not have the full rights that their male counterpart had enjoyed so far. Rogers was motivated, to propose the bill, mainly by the volunteer female civilians’ participation in the First World War as unofficial auxiliary force to the US force without â€Å"benefits of official status† such as legal protection, medical care, shelter, food, etc. So Rogers motive was that â€Å"if women were to serve again with the Army in a wartime theater they would receive the same legal protection and benefits as their male counterparts† (Bellafiare 6). Though until 1943, about 150,000 WAAC auxiliaries received the basic provisions of a soldier such as â€Å"food, uniforms, living quarters, pay, and medical care† (), rank and salary discriminations continued. Also women WAAC officers could not command men. Judith A. Bellafaire describes these discriminations as following: â€Å"The Director of the WAAC was assigned the rank of major. WAAC first, second, and third officers served as the equivalents of captains and lieutenants in the Regular Army, but received less pay than their male counterparts of similar rank† (2). Unlike the male soldiers and other officials, the WAAC members did not get â€Å"Government life insurance, veteran’s medical coverage, and death benefits† (Bellafaire 3). Also though the WAAC members, according to the bill, could work oversea, they did not get legal protection of the international prisoner’

Operational Amplifier (Op-Amp) Lab Report Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Operational Amplifier (Op-Amp) - Lab Report Example ed, high gain, voltage amplifier. They form the basis of a wide array of electronic circuits, including amplifiers, buffers, comparators, and analogue-digital/digital-analogue converters. An op-amp is represented in schematic notation by the following symbol: Figure 1 - Circuit Diagram Element Where V+ and V- are the differential inputs, VS+ and VS-, are the positive and negative supply voltages, and Vout is the output of the amplifier. While they are represented as a single element, op-amps are in fact composed of many circuit elements, and are conventionally sold as monolithically integrated silicon chips. 1.1 Origins and Development of the Operational Amplifier The operational amplifier can trace its origins back to fledgling telecommunications industry in the United States at the turn of the 19th century. With the invention of the telephone, there was demand to carry electronic voice communications over longer and longer distances. The challenge was to build signal repeating equi pment that minimized problems like distortion and crosstalk, so that multi-channel communications could be carried from one side of the country to the other. Advances in electronic equipment and amplifier design eventually led to the development of the first operational amplifiers at Bell Labs in the 1940s. Vacuum tube devices were essential to the development of amplifier technology, because they made possible for the first time the non-linear manipulation of voltage and current. â€Å"The Fleming Diode†, patented in 1904 by J.A. Fleming [1], was the first major breakthrough in this respect because it allowed for the rectification of current. Then in 1906, Lee De Forest [2] built upon this work with â€Å"The Audion†, a three-element triode vacuum tube that was the first device capable of signal amplification. Amplifiers built in the following years suffered from stability problems, as they used a positive feedback principle, and distortion due to the generation of ha rmonics by vacuum tubes. Harold Black [3], in 1927 while searching for a means of improving linearity and stability of currently-used positive feedback amplifiers, came up with the negative feedback amplifier principle. The idea of deliberately sacrificing gain in to improve stability ran counter to conventional ideas at the time, and it took 9 years for the original patent application to be accepted. Once implemented, however, the advantages of this approach quickly became clear. Within a few years the theory for stable amplifier design was formalized by Nyquist and Bode, two names now synonymous with fundamental electrical engineering principles, during their work at Bell Labs. At this

P. H. Delamotte Photograph of the Interior of the Crystal Palace Essay

P. H. Delamotte Photograph of the Interior of the Crystal Palace After a successful year of housing the Great Exposition, the Crystal Palace by Joseph Paxton was disassembled and moved to Sydenham, where it stood for the next 85 years (Hobhouse, 32). The Palace, built for the 1851 World's Fair in London, was an architectural and engineering wonder modeled after the bridge and train shed construction of the mid-nineteenth century. The structure had been designed to be quickly assembled out of prefabricated members and easily rebuilt elsewhere. Its light construction was made possible to use of thin cast iron prefabricated elements combined with wood and a glazed outer shell. The Crystal Palace housed the most spectacular collection of artistic and industrial wonders ever assembled in one place thus far. Visitors came from all over the world to see this display of power at the "Exhibition of the Works of All Nations" which was organized by Prince Albert and Henry Cole (Beaver, 12). The success of the Crystal Palace that cost "a penny per cubic foot" (Hobhouse, 39) brought Joseph Paxton much praise as well as a knighthood. The structure at Hyde Park was designed as a temporary building, able to be constructed and disassembled easily. During the Great Exposition the Crystal Palace housed the works of craftsmen, engineers and artists. The most popular of these exhibits was a crystal fountain made especially for the exhibition (Beaver, 47). The full 33,000,000 cubic feet of Crystal Palace was filled with displays and people crowding the aisles examining these wonders (Hobhouse, 39). When the Fair closed the fate of the Crystal Palace was a topic of extreme importance. Its popularity was obvious and Paxton suggested transforming... ...reat Britain. London: The Arts Council, 1965. How Does Caffeine Affect the Heart Rate of the Daphnia

My results and the graph indicate that as you add the caffeine to the daphnia, the eart rate of the daphnia increases for example the daphnia's heartbeat is 120 without caffeine, however when caffeine is added it is increased to 168. My graph shows a positive correlation and the error bars are also very small which shows that the results have a small range which suggests that my results are accurate and reliable. I think that the experiment was conducted well however there may be some ethical issues surrounding the fact that daphnias are also living species. Therefore, by using daphnias in these experiments may cause a risk for them as there would be little quantities of the species left. This would also affect other living organisms that feed on daphnias for their dietary needs therefore in the experiment we diluted the caffeine solution with distilled water to prevent the daphnia from dying and afterwards, we could put them back in their natural habitats. On the other hand, by doing this experiments it could potentially help us in the future. Also, another problem is that I may have miscounted the daphnias heartbeat due to human errors. However, as I repeated the experiment 3 times, it ensures me that the data is quite accurate. However, if I was to do the experiment again I would do more repeats to make sure the results are reliable and there would be less chance of human error. Also, I would use different concentrations of caffeine to get more accurate comparisons and to see how different concentrations may affect the daphnias heartbeat also. Overall, I think that my results are precise and distinct.
